Seminar to mark the launch of the UNFPA State of the World Population Report 2006 'Women & Migration'
On the 6th September, through the secretariat of the Parliamentary Group on Population and Development (PGPD), ARHA organised a seminar to mark the launch of the UNFPA State of the World Population report 2006 entitled A Passage to Hope: Women & International Migration.
The public seminar was held in Parliament House, and was attended by over 60 academics, politicians, experts, students and the public. Presenters included the Minister for Immigration & Multicultural Affairs, Senator Amanda Vanstone and Khin Mar Mar Kyi, a refugee from Burma now working at the Cross Cultural Resource Centre at ANU among others. Photographic exhibition opening - Common Ground: visions shared
ARHA, along with the other Common ground project partners, commissioned photographer, Steven Nowakowski, to travel to Timor-Leste and Papua New Guinea to take photos which captured the links between population, the environment and development and which also depicted the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
Twenty-seven of these photos were selected for the Common Ground: visions shared exhibition.
The opening was held at the ACT legislative Assembly in Canberra and was attended by the Timor-Leste ambassador, the PNG High Commissioner, politicians, various AusAID and other government officials as well the general public.

NGO Forum - Where’s the Sex in the MDGs? Linking Sexual & Reproductive Health, HIV & Poverty
On the 28th March 2006 at the Australian National University, ARHA and Sexual Health & Family Planning Australia (SH&FPA) held an NGO forum for the visit of Dr Steve Sinding, Director-General of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF). The forum aimed to highlight the linkages between Sexual and reproductive ill-health and HIV which share root causes including poverty, gender inequality and social marginalisation of the most vulnerable populations.
Dr Sinding talked about the key linkages between HIV and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) on a broad international level and some of the other speakers focused on PNG and East Timor.
The forum was attended by NGOs, Academics and AusAID. The speakers included Dr Steve Sinding, Director-General of IPPF, Christina Richards, CEO ARHA, Maggie Kenyon, Manager of SH&FPA international programme and Rod Menere, Reproductive health consultant.

Reproductive Health and HIV/AIDS in Papua New Guinea Forum - Intersection of HIV & Sexual and Reproductive Health in PNG
On the 13th October 2005 at the Australian National Botanic Gardens in Canberra, ARHA organised the Reproductive health and HIV/AIDS in PNG forum. The forum aimed to highlight the current situation in PNG and raise awareness about some of the policies, health systems and social issues that need to be addressed. Members of the diplomatic corps, UN agencies, academics, professionals in the field and the public attended the forum.
The speakers included Dame Carol Kidu MP, Minister for Community Development in PNG, Dr Clement Malau from the Burnett Institute, Dr Richard Feachem from the Global Fund, Kathy Lepani a PHD candidate from the Centre for Gender Relations at ANU, Chris Richards CEO of ARHA and Matt Sammels the Manager of Policy and Advocacy at ARHA.

Launch of the UNFPA State of World Population Report 2005 - The Promise of Equality: Gender Equity, Reproductive Health and the Millennium Development Goals On 12th October 2005 the Parliamentary Group on Population and Development hosted the Australian launch of the UNFPA State of World Population report for 2005. Senator Marise Payne, Hon Secretary of the Parliamentary Group on Population and Development hosted the launch. Parliamentarians, members of the diplomatic corps, other UN agencies and academics attended the launch. Ian Howie, UNFPA Representative to Vietnam launched the report. Dame Carol Kidu MP, Minister for Community Development in PNG was the keynote speaker who stated that "although there is no specific reference to PNG...it is almost as if the Report has been written for PNG as a wake up call as we celebrate our 30th Year of independence."
